N. Koutali

  • Nea Koutali

It' s here

It is built on a slope of a piney hill, while its houses give off a sweet smell from roses and honeysuckle. Its picturesque small port travels you in other eras, while it was constructed by refugees of the island Koutali from the Sea of Marmara –nowadays, many of their relics are preserved at the village’s church.

People of Koutali were famous dealers, capable fishermen and sponge-fishers, and that’s why for many years their area constituted one of the most important sponge-fishing Aegean centers.

The exports of their sponges reached USA and Japan. Today, a Sponge-fishing Museum functions at the village, with much important information about this great art, which unfortunately, is gone in the 70’s.

Moreover, it is known for its shipbuilding wood factory, where crafts are constructed and repaired. The area is famous not only for its seafood that you may taste at its taverns, but also for the feast of Epiphany, when dwellers accompany the cross masquerading, keeping some hangover from Cabeiri mysteries.

Furthermore, at the village you may find pizzeria and café.
