Flora

Nowadays, there are many thorny bushes in the island and in some locations, a rare kind of oak.The total lack of forests is mainly due to cattle-breeding, but also to special geological conditions and strong winds.
During summer, a small sea lily grows in coastal sand dunes. But, take care not to cut it, because it belongs to protected species. Just let it give you its stimulating aroma.

Fauna

Through the island live thousands of wild rabbits, which cause huge damages to viticulturists who ask all the time from the government to take measures for the limitation of their overpopulation. However, what made Lemnos known among interested people is the great populations of Chukar Partridge (alectoris chukar), the preservation of which, besides the (strictly controlled) hunting, is due to the fact that there are even largest cultivated expanses and lack of the so-called vermin (fox, ferret) that render Lemnos a huge “natural conservatory” for partridge. But, in recent years the interest is focused on “dwellers” of wetlands.

    Chortarolimni

It is a brackish lake of 2,300,000m2, which belongs to the administrative district area of the village Kalliopi. It is completely dry in summer, but the rest of the seasons it looks like a blue painting in green background, with hundreds singings of Herons, Ruddy Shelducks, Black-winged Stilts and Pied Avocets, which give their own fight for survival.
